Causes of Bad Breath
Unpleasant odours in the mouth are called bad breath or halitosis in short. It is difficult to define bad breath as a disease. However, bad breath can also be a sign of very important diseases. It is possible to divide bad breath into two parts as PATHOLOGICAL and PHYSIOLOGICAL.
1. Physiological halitosis:
When every healthy individual wakes up in the morning, the gases accumulated in the digestive tract or bad breath caused by bacteria that reproduce on the back of the tongue may occur. Brushing the back of the tongue and chewing gum is a solution.
2. Pathological Bad Breath (True halitosis):
Patients with pathological halitosis may not apply to the dentist with the complaint of bad breath. They are either not aware of the bad smell in their mouths, they either tolerate it or accept it.
Bad breath often causes embarrassment and socio-psychological problems; It can even negatively affect marriages.
Reasons:
Sulfur compounds, which are the residues of bacteria living in the oral cavity, cause bad odour. Dead or dying bacteria release sulfur compounds.
Bacterial layers and food residues accumulate on the back of the tongue. The surface of the tongue is quite rough and has a feature suitable for bacteria to live. Large amounts of sulfur compounds also accumulate in these areas.
If the tooth surface is not cleaned, it becomes suitable for bacteria to live in a short time.
In those with advanced gingival disease, there are areas that cannot be reached, which are not possible for the person to clean on their own. Such areas, such as deep gingival pockets, also cause bad odour.
We are lucky that the treatment of bad odors originating from the oral cavity gives results in a short time and the problem can be solved.
For the Treatment of Halitosis Originated from the Oral Cavity;
- Protect your teeth and gums
- Have the existing prostheses and bridges in the mouth checked
- chew gum

Other Causes of Bad Breath

- Diabetes (Diabetes) (acetone odor)
- Kidney failure (like a fishy smell)
- Liver failure
- Metabolism disorders (may be difficult to diagnose, a bad fishy odor that occurs from time to time)
- Hunger, diet, dry mouth, fasting (Fat and protein in the body begin to dissolve in liquid food deficiencies, the by-products of this metabolism are reflected as bad breath)
